Why Was The Mammoth Tree Cut Down? [Solved]

Named for the Civil War general John Willock Noble, the record sized tree was cut down in 1893 for display at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Today the sorry remains of the venerable big tree, known the “Chicago Stump,” can be seen in the Sequoia National Forest (left).
